Hey, being in California with the recent earthquake.... I was wondering if there was any way to prevent your tank from taking a fall during an earthquake? I have a 150 gallon and am dead afraid of this happening. I put weights underneath the tank in the stand to keep that from tilting over..... as for the actual fish tank, I really don't know. I'm thinking of a ton of duct tape on the back that'll keep it attached to the tank, which will help at least a little. Any other ideas?

I read someone else post on here about this, and it was a very true statement.

They said something to the effect of 'if the quake is big enough to topple your tank, you pretty much won't give a crap about the tank at that point'.

The quake we had was a fairly big quake, 6.4 I think they said right? And the peeps that were really close to the epicenter said they worst was spilled water which is very fortunate.

So pretty much, if youre unlucky and the epicenter of the quake is right below you, and it's strong enough to knock down your tank, that means you need to be worried about buildings falling over too.

Narrow and tall tanks are what worry me. I'll never own a 24" tall by 12-13" wide tank ever.

Probably can go to Home Depot and buy some wall braces for furniture.

i have floor enhancers there like brackets made of steel able to hold up too 2500lbs and i have that going through the middle of my stand making it pretty much earthquake proof.

I been through a few earthquakes and my fish tanks were fine. A friend had a 125 on cinder blocks during the Loma Prieta earthquake and even it was fine. I think if an earthquake is big enough to topple a fish tank and stand you would have much bigger problems than a broken fish tank. Just make sure your stand is very sturdy and not very tall and you'll be fine. I have lost some water out of my tank during an earthquake but that's about it.

Depends on the kind of wall you have, If its made of wood.. which most houses in Cali aren't, then you could put some support braces into the wall, and attach them to your tank, if its hollow with insulation like most of ours are, bracing will simply be ripped right out. Like stated before, if your tanks falling, you have bigger things to worry about.... like not dieing.

yup as everybody has said. in a quake thats big enough to knock over your fish tank - the tank is the last of your worries. just try to survive. worry about the fish later if you can

If you are really worried, make two large L shaped brackets and mount them on your stand to prevent back and forth swinging during an earthquake.
