What is the easiest to breed that can be kept in the tank with its parents without the parents eating them.

If your talking fish, go with some guppies, and lots of watersprite in a 10-20g. The watersprite will give the babies somewhere to hide.

For shrimp, just get some ghost shrimp, a bunch of java moss, and a 5 gallon bucket. they will do the rest.

I personally use worms if your using for feeders.

Haven't bought the tank yet just planning. I just want to raise some fish from fry. I've researched so far guppies, endlers the fry won't fit in their mouth, and convicts. The convicts look interesting because of their nutty personality. Do I need a sponge filter for the convict fry or could I just use a hob?

I bred blue eyed cichlids out the wazoo, swore all they needed was a wet paper towel, convicts are supposed to be the same. I liked the Blue eyed better, be prepared for all the fry though, we flooded the market at all the lfs and still had 3 tanks running with them! All I ever used was a sponge over the intake. African cichlids were fun and easy to breed as well as they are mouth brooders, they do all the work, you just have to have tanks available for the holding females and fry.

Cockatoo apistos, several types of tilapia, some shell dweller cichlids.

Convicts would probably be the funnest to watch, but often you will need a seperate tank for the fry. I would stick w/ the sponge filters too.

I have a 60 gallon with one male and three female convicts, one male tilapia, one texas cichlid, a jag and two catfish. Even with all that competition and territoriality the convicts regularly get fry to freeswimming and would go further but i dont take steps to remove babies and they wander off at night and the catfish get em.

With three females the male always has one laying and the other two rest and recover...they are machines, the smallest fish in the tank will cram everyone (except the rita cat that lives in the pipe) into the far end of the tank and they wont willingly come near the convicts. The females even bite the heck outa me.....spunky fish, one of my long time favorite fish to keep and breed.

I'd try them, cheap enough to get at a LFS or from a friend.
