Hey Everyone,

After zero secusess with setting up my Marineland Bio-Wheel Emperor 400 Aquarium Power Filter, I decided to give up.

Can anyone recommend an alternative? ideally with an easier set up? A hang-on-the-back filter is what I am looking for. Definitely won't be able to set up a canister by myself.

Thank you,
Alex

cannisters are very easy to setup but make sure you fill it with water prior to trying to prime them and open the valves. Eheim classics, penn plax and fx6's are my favorites out there for different reasons. eheim classics just work- no frills, penn plax are a great value option, fx6 has larger capacity and a few nice features like the bottom drain and purging air but are a pain to clean to i typically just jam them full of bio media.

AC110's are great too, just keep it level. you're going to be happy you dont have the bio wheel. they get annoying and stop working all the time.

I prefer to keep the canisters empty of water and use gravity to fill up the canisters when they are hooked up to the inlet tube. The advantage to this is that you are moving around a canister that is not as heavy and more air is purged out of the canister not filled with water. I never have to use the prime button to push the air out when done in this matter. I let gravity and incoming water to do the work of filling up the canister.

That hasn't worked well for me, historically- i use the full cannister with valves closed. then turn on power open the outlet, then the inlet and it creates a sort of vacuum.

I can't imagine which problems you might have had in setting up the Emperor filter but as someone said, give the Aquaclear 110 a try.

my assumption is the wheel didnt spin, that was always my issue with those filters but its more gimmick than anything else

That could be the case although I have never had that issue with them.
