Easiest way to breeding Shrimp?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
throw about 6-8 in a planted tank without fish and make sure at least 1 or 2 have eggs. pretty much any commonly available dwarf shrimp can be bred this way

Start with cherry red shrimp... probably the easiest of the dwarf shrimp to breed, and are commonly available... and as stated above, if possible get some that are already berried (pregnant) to kick to start everything... oh and last but not least, cover the filter intake with a filter sponge or something just to prevent any of the babies from getting sucked in and killed...

ok so i was lookin in my 10g breeder tank with the ghost shrimp in it and i one has eggs on her!!! little green balls. How long does it take to hatch? and then what!?

Can't remember how long they take to hatch... but basically the babies should just forage little bits of algae etc... and you can probably just crush up a little bit of flake food or whatever your currently feeding your shrimp if your worried they won't get enough food...

otherwise, its just a matter of waiting for them to grow and hopefully not get sucked into the filter or eaten by other fish (if you have any in the shrimp tank with them)

Ghost shrimp are one of the hardest to breed. When born they go through several larval stages for the first couple of weeks so they are so tiny that they can only eat super tiny food such as infusoria (boiled plants allowed to sit and grow protista).

To answer your question the ghost shrimp carry there eggs for 25 days give or take 5 days. She releases the live larva.

Most other shrimp do not have the larva stages and are therefore the babies are much easier to feed.

Good luck

let me correct myself when i say they are hard to breed, I mean its hard to get the babies to adult hood. The actual breading part is easy, Oh my 6 adult ghost shrimp 2 of the 3 females always are berried and they always sucessfully produce babies usually between 20 to 30.

I would like to breed the yellow form of the red shrimp too and I read on the internets that a sponge filter is the best choice.

I just got some 5 crystal red shrimp and it looks like one already has eggs!! how long does it take to hatch? and how do you tell male and female?
