easiest way to transfer bacteria to new filter

Right, so my suction aid snapped off my filter so I cant pump water from the tank into the filter. I'v got to send it for repair/replacement. What would be the easiest/fastest way to set up a new filter? I thought rinsing the old media in tankwater, then adding new media to the mix. Would the bacteria actually go into the new media? Any other suggestions?

The bacteria tend to adhere to surfaces. Using tank water to seed isn't going to yield all that much result. I would seed the new media by mixing it with old media or even established tank gravel or something.

^^^ I agree. Use what ever media you can from the old non working filter and put it into the new filter. Don't clean it. Just drop it into the new filter.
