other painteds.
i remember reading somewhere that keeping them with RES can cause diseases. ive also kept mine with common and texas maps.

I think so long as they are roughly the same size and have enough room that it would be fine with most any other kind of turtle. Certainly not a snapper or softshell of any sort though.

I prefer sand for all of my tanks but bare bottom and large gravel is good as well. I would not recommend a musk turtle but I suppose it could work as long as you get a razorback musk or one of the sp. that gets larger.

Try looking into map turtles, terrapins, sliders, and chicken turtles. see if you like any of those. Most have very similar requirements and get along fine together.

a musk turtle with your turtle id say yes but im not 100% on it but id say sand for the substrate but make sure there the same size, or like both aquatic or both half aquatic and land turtle etc..otherwise good luck friend:nilly::headbang2:nilly:

Sliders can live with painteds, the prob is that as time passes the average slider tends to become stronger then the normal painted and can bully them. Painteds are owesame turtles to comb with chicken turtles, map turtles, smaller cooters and even peacefull musks and muds.

I use to keep painted turtles with Stinkpots and Mud Turtles. I never had any issues. You gotta keep in mind that painteds are smaller than most of the other basking turtle species and should be kept with smaller turtles so they don't get bullied.
