my eastern tiger salamander is in a rubbermaid right now with paper towels and some peet moss. the other day i saw him try and dig a burrow for the first time but sadly couldnt. im thinkin of setting up a ten gallon with glass lid to lock in as much moisture as possible. my question is, can i use "eco earth" and some peet moss for him, or just "eco earth", or just peet moss?
or would coco fiber be better?

Eco earth and peat moss would be great even soil without that vermiculate and fertilizers, etc is great. They sell pure virgin soil w/o anything added cheap at any garden store.

I find glass tops more problem than anything else because air becomes stagnant as does substrate and you wind up with mold, etc and your salamander can easily get ill.

Why not keep a screen top but mist daily you can always cover half of screen with acrylic sheet, etc if you opt to but not whole screen.

Hello,

I have four tigers.I use a combination of peat and unfertilized dirt.I've used the eco earth as well.In addition to misting them.I've placed a shallow water dish to allow them to soak. They sometimes eat minnows as well.

You can always just keep it in the same tub but add a couple inches of Eco Earth. That's how I keep my Pyxie Frog.

yeah but my mom hates the idea of it living in a tub and wont let that continue.

the glass lid leaves the entire back of the tank for 3 inches uncovered so i figured it'd work. if you still dont think so lemme know.

also is eco earth good for emporrer newts?

Tubs aren't bad at all, in fact they hold humidity in very well. I had this same discusion with my wife's friend who though the same thing when she saw my Pyxie Frog in a clear, 40 gallon rubbermaid tub. I told her what was up. ;)

The glass lid idea should work fine, but continue to spray the cage at least once a day. Eco Earth is great for all types of amphibians and should work fine for the land portion of an emperor newt tank.

lol that's because when your mom thinks of plastic tubs/bins she thinks of storage for food, supplies, etc and not a place that an animal should live in and cruel.
My wife is same way with water troughs and back yard fish.
She thinks only something that is called a pond even if smaller than a large water trough should be used for fish.

They have a bin at Walmart thats a great size for a tigger sally or two. Its 30 inches long and few inches wider than a reg 20 gallon tank . Maybe she might go for that since you can show her its bigger than a 20 gallon long.

Problem with eco earth and emperor newts is that the eco earth will stick to the newt every time it leaves the water and "foul" the water every time it goes back in.

I dont know how your set up is like but you could use floating driftwood, etc for emperor newts or gravel haul out area. Even eco earth with gravel over that so it wont stick to the newt in like a plastic bin in middle of tank like an island works.

Emperor newts are great looking. I think they spend more time out of the water than most newts?

Since the newt goes from being fully submerged to land and back. Wouldnt it stick to it like "shake and bake" .
