3" to 1.5" reducer attached to 1.5" PVC to reach the sump, about 8ft
1" male with weirs cut by a rotary tool screwed into 3" to 1.5" reducer.

shortened old J tube for siphon from window tank to reducer.
3" dia PVC tube with a cap on the bottom cut length to just under the rim of planted sump tank.

put gravel in tube for stability.
Water enters the planted tank from my 150 gal, over flows into a 50 gal sump.
Been running about 3 days without incident.

Nope just making a statement on DIY. Is there anything wrong with that?

I suppose there's nothing 'wrong' with it... But when a member posts something informative for others to potentially reference, it's a little rude to come in and crap on it. I'm sure the author could have made it more presentable if that was the goal. It's hard to find people willing to R&D something, let alone take pictures and offer an explanation.

Please forgive me if your post doesnt basically translate to: "looks like crap, nobody is going to want that visible..."

Thanks for posting this. As I would like to do the same thing. It's Useful because Some of us are not just limited to the living room as far as keeping our tanks. Then there are those of us creative enough to Hide the pvc. You could grow pothos out of the tank and around it, paint it. For me It wouldn't matter though. I have a tank sitting on Jack Stands in My living room.

Personally, this is the cheap DIY overflow I like. It is completely modular and costs less than $10 when using 1 inch PVC.
The little one that you see is 3/4 inch pipe that I threw together in an emergency and now I use it for keeping my 10 gallon holding tank going when I need to separate fish. The other one is 1 inch overflow for my 45 gallon guppy/snail tank, down to my sump. I have since relocated it but it is the same exact set up.
