As of now, my water changes consist of using a 4gal bucket, filling it with water from a bathtub, applying Aquaplus to the water, then putting it in the tank. This is pretty inefficient since I have a 110. I was wondering if more efficient methods could be suggested. For example, is it necessary to apply the water treatment solution before I put it in a tank, or can I do it immediately after I finish putting water in and not damage my fish? If that's the case, I could just use my python, but I am not sure if that is safe, since the fish will be exposed to chlorine, etc.

wow you are making it very hard on yourself. Use a python, and add water conditioner to the tank as you are filling it.

Allthough not advised by some I add my water conditioner to the water as it's filling the tank. I add directly to the water and then make the python spray and mix the water. it gets the med distributed.

But isn't that potentially harmful? Or is it the norm amongst aquariasts? My fish are very long lived (their potential lifespan is 25+ years) and I would like to keep them around as long as possible, so I wouldn't want to do anything that could potentially hurt them. I do not know how long it takes before chlorine, etc. hurts them.

treating the tank and then adding untreated water "works".. i dont do it and would rather play the bucket game than risk it.. but some people do it... (some people kill childrean.. so.. just cuz some do it and get away with it does not make it a good idea)

pythons work but waste a LOT of water...

i syphon water to a 20 gallon rubbermaid tub then use vinyl hose and a pump to dump it down the drain/to the lawn.. then refill the tub/treat the water using the same hose connected to my shower.. then i use a spare pump to get the water back into the tank..

it take about 30 minutes from start to finnish to do about 80gallons worth of water change... if i used a bigger tub im pretty sure i could knock it down to about 20 minutes

Not always!
I use mine to start the siphon, and to refill the tank. Once the siphon is started I just shut the faucet off. I probably do waste a gallon per change, but you probably would too when you spill water out of the buckets;)

i stand corrected

also before someone makes a big deal out of it... im well aware that treating the tank and killing children are NOT on the same level.. just... ya know... sayin'

Ya run your python out the front door and water your flower bed as a syphon. And then hook it up and turn it on and add the dechlor. Its just fine, people have been doing it for decades.

You know you're a monster fish keeper when you can't give a rats ass about killing kids, but wasting water gets your attention:ROFL::ROFL:

This may sound funny but it works really well (for me!) If you have one of those Sprayers like the ones on a kitchen sink your set. Go to Lowe's or Home Depot and pick up a 5/16s ID hose, size it, I got 50' for like 9$. Unscrew your sprayer thing on the sink and take the washers off, push on your hose. It will stay on if you have the trigger thing taken off, so no wasting water here. It is also nice because I can adjust the temp to be the right temp instead of guessing with buckets and bathtubs. Ill post pics if you want.
