I've heard that the easiest way to tell males from females is if there are 'spots' on their lower fin that usually means they are male. Is this true or :bs:?

Ive heard that is a way of IDing Africans but just check the adams apple !

Not always...some females will have the spots as well. Size and coloration is the easy way to tell them apart. Venting is the way to be sure on ones that do not have drastic differences in color between sexes (Frontosa).

what are you trying to sex?

Damn. I guess that would've helped huh? :duh::duh:

African Cichlids is what I'm trying to identify.

the spots on the anal fin are called egg spots . not allways a good way to tell sex , but Brian_Indiana has the answers

Ugh... I just read the specifics on 'venting'.... Looks like I'll just wait to see who starts holding over the months....

When the fish are young, I was told that the top dorsal fin if it comes to a tip its a male, and if its rounded its female. But I doubt it works on all African cichlids because I still cant tell what sex my kribs are.
