A few weeks ago when our eldest son flew the nest I took charge of his cornsnake. A pretty little thing called Amber. I'll take her out of her enclosure now and again, she's usually very placid and will happily watch TV with me wrapped around my neck!

But when it's feeding time she can become quite excited. I usually feed her a large dead defrosted mouse once per week. I usually use long tongs to present her meal but once in a while I'll offer the mouse from my fingers, such as today, OUCH!

She pounced, missed the mouse, and instead sank her little jaws into the knuckle of my middle finger. Then she proceeded to coil herself around my wrist whilst simultaneously doing that jaw dislocation thing and started shuffling her open mouth further and further, and deeper and deeper around my knuckle!!

This went on for a couple of minutes until she realised that I didn't taste that good, and that maybe the mouse which I was frantically shaking in my free right hand, would probably be a better target, so she slowly released me from her grip and pounced on the mouse.

She eventually took the mouse and slid into her den, leaving me in a state of shock, with blood on my knuckle.

For someone who has zero experience with snakes it was quite an experience I can tell you! Next week, and thereafter, I'll be using the tongs!

Anyone else have any stories of pets sinking their teeth into you?

Ive kept all kinds of reptiles in the past. I've been bitten by a few of them. I had my 7' argentinian boa nail my forearm. She struck and released but I could see both sets of teeth from the upper jaw as pin pricks and a nice bruise of her mouth on both sides of my arm for days. My timor monitor ripped a strip of skin off my finger and ate it right after I got the little beast. Named that one Aries, no flight just fight. Lots of accidental damage from my larger monitors from claws. Thankfully no bites from them.

I get nailed by my Cunningham’s skinks, nasty buggers! I’ve had my blue tongue decide my hands are better than the salad I just put in, they’ve got a strong set of jaws on them. My Macleay river turtles scratch you up when you’re putting them out for sun, kicking their little legs and ripping your fingers apart with tiny little cuts!
