What's the problem when a ray tries to eat but isn't swallowing the food? The water was changed 50% recently so the water quality shouldn't be the issue. It just puts the food in the mouth and tries to swallow/chew back and forth, and gives up in the end with a chewed up food in the tank. It's got new tankmates recently, small dats and a small ATF. It seems they leave each other along. Some salt was added last week as stress reliver.

How to fix this problem?

what are you feeding? As my rays will try food and spit it out if they dont like it. Try nightcrawlers. Did you test your water? As you say you put salt in last week. but you should test after you change. what kind of ray? how big? what size tank? what has it been eating??

What size is the ray?

Lots of smaller rays have smaller mouths than you would think and can't swallow/chew most foods without some training. My retics did this with their krill for a few months until they grew a little bit and learned to swallow it like a pill.

This guy is not small at 12" in diameter. He was eating great, like a pig, until I added the tankmates (I think). He has been eating smelt and raw shrimp both peeled and unpeeled. He is in a tank footprint of 5x2. I am going to try nightcrawer.

Im no expert but, I did have a couple fidler crabs when I was little and both mine and my brothers both got sick as soon as we added the gold fish, and the pet store told me that it was because gold fish poo can cause sickness... so like I said im no expert but that could be the problem

I see mine do this from time to time... I just keep offering food and they eat all of it when they want.... I've also noticed my rays pack more food in when the tank is cooler around 78degrees F
