I have 3 electric blue acaras in a 40 Breeder. A pair used to lay eggs every 3 weeks for about 3 months. Had some success rearing a dozen or so. most of the time they would protect them for a week and lose interest. They haven’t laid eggs for months. I do water changes like always and feed em like I always have. Hard to understand. Sometimes after a major water change that would trigger them. Not anymore. They are active and swim around the tank as if they are healthy. Any words of wisdom? Thank you.

In nature, wild type Andinoacara's have a breeding season they stick to.
My Panamanian Andinoacara coerleopuntatus spawn Dec thru March (the dry season) , and may spawn 2 or 3 times during that period,
they then stop until the next year in Dec.

Mine have stuck with this seasonal pattern, for the last 3 years.

Yes, I believe the one in the previous post was the female.
In this post pic of them together, its male above, female below, both in spawning colors.
But almost the opposite of most cichlids, breeding colors are more drab.
In normal coloration, below

Female above, male below.
Although gender difference are subtle,
She is a bit more boxy shaped the male a little more elongated, and his dorsal reaches almost to the end of the caudal, hers, reaches about half way.

Of course the colors may just be a change in sunlight, or with the last rains of the rainy season, merging into the dry season, tannins seem to build up naturally from dried leaves on surrounding vegetation that drip into, and fall in the tank.
The tank gets tinted almost tea brown.

Their young are in another tank. They look to be getting in the mood. About ready to go back to the hard to find rainbow cichlids.
