I took a chance and bid and won two lots of Koi from American Koi Online.

They are 10 fish per lot 3 - 4 inches.

My price delivered works out to about $9 per fish. I am going to give
a few to my neighbor as I already have a few kohaku butterflies.

I am curious if there are folks knowledgeable about better quality Koi
what you think about these. It won't hurt my feelings. I would like your opinion.

thanks

Garry

I love them, but then again I'm not an expert, Koi judging professional.

I'd personally keep them all, too.

Many of the koi hardcores don't like longfins at all. I don't like them either, but I think they look ok on the metallic varieties. Your doitsus look ok, but they are pond grade.

Is the positioning of the color that makes them pond grade? I am trying to learn the difference but I swear sometimes it looks very subtle as to the great and just good.

There are so many things to consider when evaluating koi. I'm not knowledgeable enough to help you with the quality. Mostly I read what the hardcore say and try to learn whenever they evaluate koi.

For doitsus (scaleless variety), you want an even row of the dorsal scaling down the back, with even sizes. The positioning of the color (pattern) does play a role but it's also the "depth" of the color (this sounds vague, sorry :P). People try to teach others to look at the quality first before the pattern, but pattern will separate the winners from the others.

Your koi seem to have decent body conformation, so it's good they culled for that. I'm not an expert by any means, so feel free to disregard anything I say lol.

http://www.koi-bito.com/forum/ There's some eye candy there. You'll see winners from Japan or other koi shows. Very knowledgeable people there, too. I have lots to learn but I've diffused myself with all the other fish I keep.

they are nice fish, not fancy. as stated above, butterfly koi are not considered to be pure koi amongst purists, in the same manner some fishkeepers dislike hybrids.

the ones you have here are just a bunch of random mixes and some are of lower quality strains like Kujaku, Shusui, Hariwake, Kikokuryu, etc. there are many factors that to consider for higher grade fish but these arent eve pure strains of any one type of koi.

nevertheless, theyll grow up to be awesome pond fish, i know because i have lots of lower grade fish that grew up to be stunning! :)

:iagree:, I'm not a koi snob, I like fish.

They show well from the top and look healthy.

The important thing is that you like them.

(remember to start putting away for there college as there going to be around for a long time ;))

For nine bucks they look like really nice.

If they were taught to eat Gambusia then you really scored!

Yeah now that would really be a coup wouldn't it?

Think the Pavlov's dog training would work?

Maybe some Koi food molded in the shape of a gambusia?

Alright I'll put it on my to do list.
