Picked up a pair of EBJD's last week, each one is about 1". Paid $15 for each which I thought was a good price...:headbang2

I read somewhere that they are very prone to disease early on and hard to care for until they are larger.

My question is...Do you really need a UV Sterilizer in your tank to keep these guys healthy?

I raised mine without a UV sterilizer and had no problems. I no longer have him but grew him from .5" to 4" without any diseases or parasites at all.

they are a weaker inbred strain of the standard blue jacks. you dont need a uv. just keep your water changes up an the water quality high, and be sure to add salt to keep their stress coat up.

I've raised plenty from 1" my largest I had was 7". I have never used a uv sterilizer. I'm sure it would make life easier, but you can do it without one. Good luck...
Oh and...PICS!!!!

I've used UV and just lots of water changes. On my over crowded fry tanks I do 50% water changes daily plus I'm way over filtered. I could'nt tell a difference using uv or not. I feed Live Brine Shrimp and as they get to the 1/2 inch mark Thera A and Spirulina Flakes. As they get bigger start them on Color Bits, Fine chopped blanched Peas, freeze dried Blood Worms and Mysis Shrimp. This seems to work for me with only low numbers of loss. After they reach the 1 inch mark they seem to be fairly tough..dgarrett

IME, the most important thing to be successful with EBJD is to keep them alone when young (so they don't get picked on and look funky as adults), and keep the tank stress free as possible.

Give them hiding spots, they are very timid at a small size but will be okay if they can hide.

I think frequent water changes and I have a uv sterlizer that really can help. But frequent attention and they should be good.
