I have an EBJD 1.5in and a JD 2.5in in a 55 gal. however i had to put a divider into the tank because the JD was going after the other would it be ok if i kept the two in the divider until they are about the same size

I agree with Mac on growth rates...

But if the Blue Dempseys turns out to be male... and the Standard turns out to be female... they may still end up being compatible patners as young adults... and way down the road the Blue may become larger...

If both are males I doubt they will ever become compatible... if both are females, it's a crap shoot...

55 is pretty large for 4" of fish. I would think they would have plenty of room. Do you have a few decent hiding spots/places to claim territory?

Define "going after"?

How long did you let both fish socialize in the tank? It might take a few days, etc.

im havig the same problem with mine right now. I have a 2.5 inch jd and a 1 inch jd and tried adding a 1in EBJD and within putting him in the tank with others for 5 mins half of his tail is gone =(

It's aparently tricky to do. I have the same set up, only my EBJD was added a few weeks before and was larger than the JD I added (by like .5" or less). The way I see it, the EBJD is supposed to be less mean (mine is not) so for best results you need to add him first. Do you have a second tank or quarantine tank? If so I'd try moving the JD there for a few weeks and re-doing the 55. This will hopefully make the EBJD feel more in control when you re add the JD in a few weeks. Again, lots of hiding spaces, you can't have too many.
