Thinking about setting up a tank for EBJD's. Start with six or so as juvies, and let them pair off as they age. Anyone have any experience with the EBJD's breeding that can give advice?
Never done it myself but have done some reading up on them. To make true EBJD i think you have to take a EBJD and breed it to a non EBJD with a certain gene and then breed them back to the father. Not certain if that's totally correct or not but close. That's only to make true EBJD's i'm sure you could just let them pair up and see what happens.
EBJD's are nearly all male. To breed them, it takes breeding a full EBJD with a common female JD. Then the offspring will all be carriers of the EB genes. Cross one of the offspring with a full EBJD, and you will turn out EBJD's.
yea, I thought about it too, but that is right, have to breed to common, then to het for, which only 50% of offspring will be (theoretically). ETA of more ebjds 2+ years. and furthermore, theyre not very hardy for cichlids... and there was more to that thought but I forgot. but yea best of luck would def be worth the time, dont know anyone personally who has done it, but its entirely plausible if youre patient enough.
I spoke with a local breeder who has 5 pairs of ebjd. He stated they all are carriers of the blue gene, but only one of each pair displays the trait. He said when the blue gene comes from both parents the fish does not survive more than a few weeks.
He's got 2-3 batches (400+) of fry growing out now.
