I currently have a 5" male solo in a 125gal., trying to decide on wether to breed or fill with peaceful tankmates. my lfs has a similar sized ebjd female, can they breed? If i decide not to breed , what would you recommend for tankmates??? cichlid and non cichlid

An ebjd pair can't breed. You will need a regular female jd for your male. For tankmates, you should add some mildly agreessive cichlids like sevs and FM. A group od large tetras or barbs will bring life to the tank also.

Breeding is tough with ebjds. There haven't been any long-term viable fry with ebjd x ebjd. Also tough is male jd with female ebjd since ebjds tend to be less sturdy and somewhat more docile. Male ebjd with female jd seems to work and crossing back the offspring carrying the blue gene with the father yields 50% ebjd fry.

As to community, go very conservative with tankmates, and even then your ebjd may hide a lot (individuals vary). I know my 5.5" ebjd use to hide from my sev and even my rainbow! Firemouth, although they're more bark than bite, may be too aggressive if your ebjd is one of the really docile ones. Sevs should be fine, rainbow, spinossisimus. If yours is more aggressive, then your options open up. Have you gotten any impressions about its level of aggressiveness?

mine is very aggressive even for a jd, he attacks the python when i clean his tank, he also has killed several cons

Given that he's no pushover, you've lots of choices. Just on the basis of color I'd suggest either a nic or a female sal (except maybe for your homicidal female), a nice gt. Firemouth would be fine, imo. The really mild cichlids might not be the way to go in this case, although maybe the sev would work out. The more robust geos might work as well.

Even with his pluckiness, I'd hesitate to do anything like texas or the really tough bigger guys. Anyway, you seem to have decent options.

If you DO end up trying to breed him, I'd strongly suggest you look at:

There are two major breeders on the forum there - Hollywood and Ormed. You can't ask for better info than from those two! Be advised that it IS a two generation cycle, and your first generation will be "normal" jds carrying the blue gene. You'll probably need to cull all of that generation other than the ones you intend to try to breed back, since putting jds that carry the blue gene into the general population would certainly be frowned on by purists. Could feed them to your sal and other monsters though! :naughty: The alternative would be to sell them privately as bgjd (blue-gene jds) as potential breeding stock. If you're thinking of going commercial, however, that may not be such a good idea for business.
