So I've always done a decent job to get fish to grow bigger. But never for them to grow especially in color since 90% of my stock barely have any color. I always recommmend People to use NLS because they are know for bringing out the greatest color. I feed my fish NLS but there is no color difference (And it makes sense. Silver arowanas, Clown knives, Bichirs, Plecos, ID shark - practically colorless fish). But now i have 2 EBJDs. supposively male and female. And I had a pretty bad Ich Scare, and i know they are more prone than other JDs for parasites. But i have never experienced "targetting" a specific color! Does anyone have a good idea of what i should do or what to feed them? I got them at 1.5 inches. Its been a month. So far ive been feeding them about 2x a day. In the morning i feed them tetracolor max flakes. and in the evening i feed them spurilina20 flakes.. Of course i know the color wont come out till they are adults, but some one told me they should be fed color foods from young so their color when they are adults are much better. is this true?

From what I understand u need to worry more about getting the right food digestive wise, then worry about color second. Ebjd are extremely prone to digestive illness and ive heard of many who have lost their fish due to an unappropriate diet. Hopefully some ebjd owners can elaborate on the subject

It's funny cause I heard that too. The flakes I've been feeding them is similar to what the original owner was giving them. I did feed them bloodworms at a point but definitely stopped now... Is there anything specifically I should be feeding them?

I feed spirulina flake only to my EBJDs. I usually feed 3x a day but small amounts. I learned the hard way not to feed any frozen foods until they are larger. They don't seem to handle them well when they're small. Just keep them healthy and the color will come later.

Man I think it is just the opposite. Ebjd I've kept are colorful as hell when they are young. But they often change color and pattern as juvies. I feed mine bloodworms and nls. I think problems may arrise when people over feed there young ebjd's to pump them up faster as they tend to be slow growers.

I feed my young stock NLS flake food its 49 or 50% protein and NLS Grow .5 mm pellets also about same protein. (The regular NLS pellets is less than 40% protein, I think 35% my opinion is great food for older fish) The only frozen food I feed is brine shrimp. (about every other day at least) My yound adult blue male loves a pellet that Kens Fish sales called the growth pellet which is 55 % protein. It's 2.0 mm my young jacks thats a couple inches long likes it as well. Spiralina is also good I use to feed it but only do it on ocassions since Ive switched to NLS. I agree dont worry about the color flakes, just feed a good quality food.

Here is a link to when I bought several about 3/4 inch. I fed them also a beefheart flake growing them out. This is what my breeder recommended. Many dont like beefheart but mine did great on it. I got it from angelsplus their beefheart flake has fish meal, shrimp, krill and spiralina in it as well.

OH! super nice! haha my EBJD's are kinda fading in color... kinda worrying me. they eat and move when fed. very quickly too. but when i dont ffed them they just sit there...

Hey I own 2 EBJDs myself that I raised from 1.5" for the past 5 months, the biggest is now over 4.5" and he eats frozen bloodworms as a treat with the occasional earthworm and he gets flakes and sinking shrimp pellets every day, I fed them live blackworms at first but after a parasite scare, never again... But yeah if the color is fading like mine was I simply switched to a darker substrate and they began getting darker and more prominent colors, hope this helps!

I see... I fed mine black worms as well. But after I heard it's extremely prone to parasites I stopped. But unfortunately the day I stopped all my black worms went missing. Rey swam through the worm feeder and into my substrate. As for the environmental coloring... I think in going to plant some dwarf sags into the substrate... This way they can be a little more colorful and help with the water quality. Unfortunately my light is less than adequate but no matter. I know ebjds are cichlids but I haven't heard stories of them uprooting anything... Unless spawning. Anyone have any experience?
