I've just ordered some EBJD's for a GREAT deal. The guy is shipping them with beefheart flakes, but I always heard New Life Spectrum was the best. What do you guys think. I also wanted to know which NLS to get (The EBJD's are 1 inch).

Thanks,
Michael

Make sure u keep them either on thier own or in a community with non aggressive fish while they are small... They r real sensitive fish... But food wise i would use nls the tiny pellets

Bobblehead,

NLS is a great choice. For your 1in EBJD, my first recommendation would be NLS Optimum flakes. These flakes are great since they are natural and easy to digest, and they contain extra garlic to prevent parasites (which ebjd are very prone to) and a good amount of protein. I would only feed them flakes until they are about 3-4in, as if they eat too many pellets (even 1mm) they can get bloat. After that, then feed them NLS 1mm pellets of either the Cichlid Formula, or the Thera + A formula for the extra garlic. I currently own 8 EBJDs since they were 1in like yourself, and having experience with parasites and bloat in the past, this would be my advice.
Also like the others stated, keep them by themselves if you can or with non-aggressive fish as they get stressed easily. Keep up your water changes and you will have very healthy EBJDs! Good luck :)

P.S, here is a link to the Optimum flakes on amazon, great deal!

well the guy is sending me 6, so I was thinking I could grow them out together. Is this not ok? they'd be by themselves in a 55. If so what size should I separate them? What age would venting be easy (for a noob, I've never vented before but understand this is the only way to sex EBJD's). I will see if I can get the foods listed above (I get most products for a great deal cuz I work at a pet shop. If I can't, I'll definitely look into your link.

Thanks everyone. If anyone else has any sort of advice (food related or not) I'm all ears, I've never had one of these, and understand they're very difficult to keep.

Another question, I've heard they need to eat 3 times a day (small amounts) but I work and occasionally spend days away (in which case I COULD have my little brother feed the fish, but I'm nervous about that, don't want to over feed) I want to know if an automatic feeder would be good. I'm so excited about these fish, but I'm nervous, I don't want to lose them. Any help would be MOST appreciated. Thanks.

They will do great in a 55g. I have 8 in a 60g w/ no problems. EBJD are rarely aggressive towards each other, but just in case they are, provide a good amount of hiding places to be safe.
3 times a day is good, but just like you said, you have to be careful with overfeeding. EBJD are very prone to bloat and SBD(swim bladder disease), and parasites. So as long as you feed them food (flakes preferably when they are small for easy digestion) with garlic such as NLS, you should be fine in terms of overfeeding and/or parasites. They can go several days w/o food so don't worry.
Have good filtration, low nitrate, temp between 76-80deg F, lots of water changes and you'll be on the road to having great looking fish! Good luck :)

Thanks so much, I have a marine land penguin 400 on it (it's for up to a 90 gallon tank) When they get bigger I'll put another one on the other side. nitrates should be good. My heat should be good, So i should just need a NLS flake food? Thanks so much, you've been a HUGE help!

Np Im glad to help!
The penguin 400 is good, but in my experience they tend to have problems and are noisy. Look into Aquaclear filters on amazon for the future, (specifically the AC110), it filters 500gph quietly and reliably and offers excellent biological filtration. And yes, all you need is the NLS flake food until they are about 3-4 inches, then you can switch them to the NLS 1mm pellets.
Here's some pictures of my EBJDs who are about 3inches and Ive had them since they were about half an inch. You can see how healthy they are w/ no deformities!
