My EBJD is now around three inches. Been doing fine upto now. Hides most of the time except at feeding, swims with tail fin clamped and kind of skitters at high speed into things. His beak is getting more pronounced and he just acts weird. Any ideas?

Im not exactly sure or positive but it could be where your tank is?
When i had certain fish in my 55..actually my breeding pair of JDs..whenever id come down the stairs theyd flip out.
I moved them out and put my FH in and hes fine.
So it could be perspective?

He has been in this tank for a few months now.

Thanks for trying.

Mine does it too....But when i had in with my other JD he got his a@@ kicked so i took him out, and ever since he does that...my other ones dont do it though...

Mine has his finns clipped at 1.5" and i'm already scared he might be dying.. although he still eats...

I was so sacred to find him one morning diseappear until i found out he was hiding on the very top of the tank...

I think these fish are just inbreed so much that they will act weird.. ?

I know it doesn't answer your question.. But i feel your concern

How is he doing now...is he still eating.. i always seem to hear they don't do well.. and it is a shame because they are so beautiful

Hello hope I can shed in some lite for ya!

I've kept EBJDs and reg JDs for a while now. From personal experience EBJDs behavious as juvie's tend to be skittish if they don't feel safe in their environment. I recommend over head cover and dim lighting while they grow. This will make them more comfortable and secure in their home. If your EB eats then he isn't necessarily sick. A hungry fish is a happy fish. He is most likely stressed from something in the tank hence the clamped fins. Your water parameters good? Temperature swings? pH swings?

When keeping EBJD's my husbandry is pretty anal. 30-50% water changes every 5-7th day, w/ added salt to new water Prime as conditioner, filter maintenance EVERY month, and a broad variety diet. I feed 3X a day with something different every feeding. I beleive that Spirulina is a must, and crucial factor in EBJDs diet.

Now onto its beak nose. This is an ON GOING discussion of Breeding the right specimens on EBJD forums. Can't really tell you where this "deformity" or "trait" necessarily comes from, but IMO i think it comes from when EBJDs first hit the aquarium hobby it was due to inbreeding. Now most breeders will cull any fry/brod that has this trait and start over with a different "parent(s)." Where did you purchase your EBJD from? I always suggest before buying EBJD always request where the specimen came from or what "Line" of EBJD it came from. For better information or searching other topics look at the forum in my sig. Lots of info you will find. :)
