okay I have 2 1/2 inch ebjd in a 20 gal for about 2 months housed with a blue acara. He has started to turn almost black and has stopped eating he also seems look like he has trouble breathing almost like coughing I do water changes once every 2 weeks.

Check you water parameters!!!!..EBJD are very disease prone and are often sensitive to changes in water parameters......PH, Nitrates, Nitrite.....possibly aggression from your blue acara???....EBJDs can be weak little things

In a 20 gallon and with an EBJD I would doing 25% water changes every 2 to 3 days. Religiously. I would also house him alone until he hits the 3 1/2" to 4" mark. At that point I would add dither fish or a smaller cichlid. Always keeping the blue the dominant fish. If he pulls through I would remove the acara. Give him the best chance possible. High protein varied diet. If you have not done some research please do. Good luck with him.

yeah first check your water params and see what the levels of everything are, i would definitely do more water changes, if the acara is the same size and they are the only things in the tank then 50% once a week should be good, if all params are good then look at his poo, if you got him from lfs and never treated him for parasites then that is probably what it is these guys are very prone to it and almost always have it if you dont get them from a reputable breeder, if this is what it is treat with JUNGLE PARASITE CLEAR do all three treatments not just two and hopefully he will pull through

the acara is bigger but the 2 dont bother each other at all and im leanin towards internal parasites because the poo is white and stringy. for parameters i need to get the test kit.

yeah its def parasites then, go ahead and treat for it RIGHT AWAY to have any chance of him recovering though if hes already stopped eating it could go either way, and make sure to do ALL THREE treatments not just two, and if he does start to eat then chop off a little piece of one of the extra tablets and put in cup with little bit of tank water (just enough to get it to dissolve) and then soak his pellets in it for like 30min and feed them to him (net food out dont put extra medicine water back in tank, and also a test kit is definitely a must have, even when nothing is wrong its always a good idea to check your levels to make sure everything is ok, if i were you i would go ahead and get the API test kits for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate when you go to get the JUNGLE PARASITE clear GOOD LUCK hopefully he will pull through
