I had 2 EBJDs and just sold the smaller submissive one to a client and he won' t come out of hiding. We tried some giant danios as dither fish but he still hides all day. I was thinking about re-doing the aquascape to open up the areas some more. Could he be traumatized from the change of scenary, or lonely without his bully brother?

Some EBJD just don't have attitude. I would suggest sitting near the tank a lot. Make sure that he is the dominant fish in the tank. If he is around social fish, he may become more social. Often fish will act frightened if the other fish in the tank get frioghtened easily. Try adjusting the number of hiding places. Reduce hiding places and make caves where the fish can see you and you can see the fish.
Like most creatures, fish can be desensitized.
I have fish that are camera shy, but the more they see the camera, the less it affects them.
Introducing weaker fish, will often bring out the confidence in your bluejack. Make him feel like he is king.

Does he come out in the open at feeding time?

great points stevie p he needs to possibly feel secure..or familar with his settings could be his nature..But try some dithers like Steve said. When his king he will blossom!

I have my EBJD housed alone and he's as sociable as can be...even attacks the gravel vac at only a little more than an inch long.

I like the dither idea...it'll get him out a little more and give him confidence in the fact that he's bigger and stronger than some others in the tank.

i think getting ebjds in groups help them be more outgoing. i have 3 and they never hide. theyre always at the top of the tank begging for food. tankmates are a silver arowana and a spotted puffer. my friend got a single ebjd around the same time i got my 3 and all his does is hide. he has a little convict and some type of tetras in with his.

Your spotted puffer belongs in high-end BW.

EBJD need peaceful tankmates like geo's or a keyhole cichlid.

Watch to see if its eating, if its not it might be sick
