Just placed my order for Electric blue Jack Dempsey, just moved to a more permenet residence and will be setting up a 55 or a 75 gallon up for th ebjd and com. pleco.
QUESTION 1) i really dont wanna pay 180 for a stand and was wondering about any stand recomendations.

Question 2) could I have a juv. texas cichlid or a REDtex. as a roomate? or would a Jewel work better and why?

Question 3)filtraion mostlikly will go with an aqua clear 50 OR A 70. until i can afford a canister filt... and a powerhead. will that be enough for the beginning.?

Thanks a ton. Brandon

i bult my own for my 125, my discuss/ebjd/babyaro/cats & tiretrack, are on my dresser...personaly i would go wid a juv texas Jewelz are just jerkz, filtration is fine to start of with, as long as u upgrade eventualy and u keep your water clean and Nitrates down..stable PH..water changes...look at the diy section for stand ideas, its got me all of $35 at HD next to me..including screwz.... took maybe 2 hours to do if that...to me thats the best way u can go...and its to your liking

i built my stand for my old oscar setup def. worth the effort. unfortunatly im located in arcata ca going to school. in an appartment and no tools. therefor S>O>L haha. i think i want a super red texas to go with the ebjd what do you think. ANYONE KNOW A GOOD PRICE. thanks

1) For easiest and cheapest effect: plywood on top of cinderblocks with a piece of pink foam between the tank and wood.
2) EBJD's are known to be more passive than regular JD's...They're also known to be more prone to stress. I would go with a more peaceful tankmate like a second EBJD, severum, keyhole, acara, etc.
3) An ac50/70 would work on a smaller growout tank (assuming that the specimen you ordered is young) for now, but more thorough filtration is advisable, particularly because of the notorious sensitivity of EBJDs, along with the need to upgrade in order to suit the needs of a larger fish soon. You might as well get a bigger filter now, assuming you haven't bought it yet, then wait for an deterioration of water quality that might harm your fish.

excellent advice.. ok weill how much more delicate are the ebjd should i just go with a texas and somthing else. i want a tough fish i have had a reg jd befor thought a ebjd would quite similar am i wrong?

elaborate on the stand design i probably will do the cinderblock and plywood. would i need a middle brace and whats up with the foam?

Young Blue dempseys are typically less aggressive than Standard Dempseys which are less aggressive than Texas Cichlids... A Texas Cichlid is a horrible tankmate for a Blue Dempsey...

Blue Dempseys are known to be prone to parasitic infesctions... stress further lowers immune systems therefore a stressed Blue Dempsey is exceptionally prone to illness... avoid stress in Blue Dempseys...

In my opinion... search locally (craigslist & local fish clubs) for a 29 gal tank for just the Blue dempseys and maybe some Tetras or something until he gets some size on him. Meanshile save some money to buy a larger tank, stand and filtration for when he outgrows the small tank... at that point add a tankmate or two...

okay well i guess i will just let him grow and dev....whats up with this cider block stand i am def. looking into doing that. and then purchasing another stand and a loarger tank. i want a 125... so i was thinking sand for the jd.

My understanding is that EBJD are significantly more delicate and peaceful than regular JDs. If you're in love with the texas, by all means get some and consider leaving the EBJD out (I don't have any first hand experience with the combination).

My 55 is on 3 stacks of cinderblocks (one on each side and then a center column) with plywood cut about .5" bigger than the frame on each side. The pink foam is used to help even out any imprefections in the wood, allowing for complete contact for the bottom frame of the tank.
