Third rock from the sun
I am in the process of moving my 55 across the room, and I'm going to switch to sand so I can have a Senegal bichir in the 55 with the EBJD. I was wondering if Silica sand would be a good choice for both of them, or would it flush their colors out? the background would be a dark brown (wall color) or a planted scene.

I dont know much the type you said but I believe if its natutal color or a dark coffee it should be fine. When I had my ebjd I noticed they tend to like darker subtrate it helps to bting out thier color

Ive been changing my substrate from crushed coral to dorset pebbles bit by bit during each water change. About half of the tank is crushed coral and half pebbles. Its amazing the change in colour of my green terror and JD when they swim between sections. I say go for dark substrate. I always thought they were sick because the lack of colours.

I have a managuense, and I have cylica sand (I used pool filtration sand, 10 bucks for all you need lol, then filter it out by overflowing water into a trash can or buckets with the sand until the overflow is clear) I added some black rocks, from a 10 lb bag, with a black background and my managuense couldn't look more colorful. Fish tend to like sand more anyway.

If you wanna get sand like mine then just go to meijer, or any place that sells pool filtration sand with no added chemicals. That's what I used and there has never been a problem. Only problem with sand in general, is sometimes when a fish kicks it up it will get sucked into the filter. Mine hasn't clogged or messed up on any way, but it's just something maybe to look out for.
