What will work with a couple of EBJDs in a 55G??

If the filtration matters I have a magnum 350 and a tetra 30-60 running ATM but I will soon add another Tetra 30=60 and a 20G sump =)

substrate is sand, no deco as of right now (tight on money)

Sounds like a nice setup. I've never kept EBJDs personally but I've heard they're quite a bit more docile than JDs. I'd look into some nice colorful dithers like Odessa Barbs. And perhaps once you throw in a piece of driftwood or rock, you could consider an exotic pleco. In my opinion, a Blue Phantom Pleco would look awesome with the EBJDs

yeah it would, but theres only one problem with that.... I have cant keep any kind of pleco alive... every one I have bought has died =(

That's unfortunate to hear. Any ideas why?

some plecos are relatively easy to keep, I suggest you try a bushynose . . . they are fairly hardy, and won't get too big . . . it helps if you drop some sinking food for them to eat, and maybe keep some driftwood in the tank (but no Mopani wood, they don't eat it)

as for EBJD companions, I keep my male EBJD with a convict and a gymnogeophagus (both female), but you should be able to keep them with any non-aggressive fish . . . preferably smaller than the JDs

I'm thinking laetacara, rainbows, firemouth, etc.

and of course, cory cats are always safe companions . . .

I have an EBJD living with an ornate poly, 4 AT Dats (same size as the EBJD) and 2 NTT dats (bigger than the EBJD).

One of the AT dats fights with the EBJD for the same spot, but theres never any damage just chasing. The EBJD while more docile than the JD is still somewhat aggressive.

Dats can't live in an 55 forever, but they grow so slow you could have some smaller ones in there for years!

Theres the dat he always tango's with. Him and only him.

In my experience, raising juvi Blue Dempseys together is fine, but once they reach sexual maturity males will not appreciate the company of males of their own species. So until you know the gender of your Blue Dempseys you should not plan on them being together for life.

I have kept my large adult male Blue Dempseys with: Oscars, Green Terror (female), Convicts (pair), Firemouth (pair), Elliott's Cichlid (pair), W African Jewels (Pair), Orange Head Geos (pairs), BGK, Severum (male), yong adult Trimac (female), female Dempseys and probably several others that I'm not remembering... (all adults unless noted otherwise)...

Although I do raise my Blue Dempseys with only other Blue Dempseys or other smaller more Docile fish... such as Apistos, Rams, young OH Geos, etc...

I have seen a very wide range of "toughness" in Blue Dempseys and therefore I am not quick to assume they can, or cannot, handle certain tankmates...

My advice to you is to relax, grow your fish out, determine gender, determine your fish's individual aggression levels... Then (and only then) worry about tankmates... for the time being add some dithers to the 55 gal containing 2 Dempseys and enjoy your fish :D
