I have a 55 gallon tank which I'd like to make an EBJD the centerpiece of. The tank also currently contains two blue rams. I'd like to add a large school of tetras or other smaller schooling fish to fill out the tank. I was considering cardinal tetras due to their colorful appearance. Any other suggestions of colorful fish that could be successfully kept with an EBJD (and how many)?

I had a baby EBJD about 1/2" when I got it. I kept it with other small tetras and small yellow fin barbs while he was small. But I never was able to keep it long enough to get bigger as my barbs got bigger faster they killed it. I think when your demsey gets bigger it can eat your Cardinal tetras. When your demsey is small you can keep them with other non aggressive fish of similar size but as the demsey gets bigger it can get more aggressive also. But you never know if they live together when small demseys are not as aggressive as other cichlids can be.

My ebjd finds lemon tetras to be delicious. My swordtails haven't had any problems, you can get 3 or 4 pairs of different varieties.

Silver dollars would work.

Yeah, I wouldn't try anything under 3 inches with an adult EBJD. Juveniles, maybe as they might not see them as food after growing up around them, so you stand a better chance if you grow them out with small fish.

i agree if it will fit in its mouth it will eat it. however there are exceptions like my fire eel that wont eat a guppy and he is about two foot long
