I have 3 EB's and they seemed fine for a while but they started scratching around and two of them had sunken in eyes. There wasn't any outward signs of anything to explain the scratching other than one had a little excessive slime coat, grayish looking. I started with salt first and increased the heat. That didn't do anything so I put them into a quarantine tank. I've tried a run of Formalin, then Aquari-sol, then Parasite Clear, to no avail. I'm now trying a run of T.C. Tetracycline to see if it's bacterial. One is looking a little better but one still has one eye that sunk in. I do still have half the T.C. treatment to do so we'll see.

They are and have always eaten voraciously.

I wouldn't dare post the water parameters with all I've been doing with the tank. The first tank they were in where the problems started (a 55)are great. I do weekly 20-25% water changes. Ph 7.2, ammonia 0.

I'm at a loss. Has anyone had this happen & what did you do to fix it??

Thanks,
JoelR

HAHAHA this could be the most awesome lookng fish ive ever seen...

i picked up a 5" regular jd the other day and have noticed his eyes are sunken in too. not as much as yours. he is my first jd, but i finally decided jds eyes are naturally more sunken in than other cichlids. i wouldnt worry about itbut maybe someone with more experience with jds can chime in.

If it were just the eyes I may just watch it but they are itchy too. They shake their heads and scratch on decor. ?????

sounds like flashing. are they new to the tank? could be change in ph, etc

No, that is not normal in any way! I have and breed EBJD's and have never seen anything like that. Those eyes are sunken and should not look like that for any reason. Ive never seen or heard of that before. Has is been getting any better? Many people loss EBJDs at a young age, especially ones that are in poor health and come from the LFS. My guess is that you will probably lose them. If you do I would go and buy new ones from a reputable breeders. I have found that their EBJD's are more colorful, have no deformities(like beak face) and do not just die and get sick at a young age. I dont know what else you could possible treat for, but good luck and let us know what happens.
