So my wife wanted an ebjd to go with our apistogramma agassizii and 6 bolivian rams so I obliged. He (i was told almost all ebjd are male if not is there a wayto sex them?) seems fairly healthy. I've been feeding nls thera + and he's been happily wolf ingredients it down. I'm under the impression that they are slower growers, dont grow as big as and are more docile than regular jd's. As such, do you think he'd do well long term with the rams and agassizii? Right now they are all in a 50 gallon (36×18 footprint) but I'm sure I'll have to upgrade at some point. He's the biggest fish in there at 2 inches not counting the tail. Followed by a 1.75 agassizii then the rams between .75 and 1.25 inch.

Also. Off topic but are you supposed to include the tail in measurements? Like everyone says ebjd are safe once they hit 4 inches. Does that include tail or not? Is that when they hit sexual maturity?

Sorry a lot of questions and a bit all over but I a only had these once before and they were doing great til I went to boot camp and left them in my brothers hands. But I want to do it right this time

Standard length ...is without caudal fin (tail)
Total length is with tail
JDs are generally considered too aggressive, to be housed with the dwarf cichlids you mention.
It may take time to grow into that normal aggression, and I believe 4" maybe slightly smaller, is when you will start to see that aggression begin, if that is the personality of the one you have.

My EJBD is about 6 inches and he goes through stages of hiding all of the time or swimming everywhere. He never bothers anyone and is actually quite skittish. I've taught everyone in that tank to eat out of my hand (except for one very new edition) but he won't do it. From my understanding there are male and females and I'm thinking of picking up another male and female next weekend. You can't breed EBJD together though because the frys will be too weak to survive. From what I've read, the only way to breed them and have healthy babies is to cross them with a regular female JD and hope from that batch there is a female with the blue gene. You then get that female with a blue gene and cross it with another male EJBD to get strong EJBD babies.

Ok thank you guys. Duanes when you say 4 inch are you saying standard or total length.

I guess it depends on individual personalities

I guess I'll have to monitor and have another tank cycled and ready to go

Califishguy put of curiosity what are your ebjd tank mates. And how do you sex an ebjd. I know with regular jd's it's blue beard for females. But you wouldn't know with ebjd's

I'm not an expert in sexing them but it seems like people look for the usual characteristics like rounded dorsal fin being female, etc. Probably the best way to sex them is to vent them. I should be picking up a female this weekend so I might be able to see more distint characteris tics between the two genders. I'll let you know and I'll post some pics.

When I sex juvenile fish, I always pay attention to their behavior compared to the other fish in the tank as well as their size and sometimes fin shape. I've never been wrong yet with the "if it acts like a boy, it's probably a boy" technique on fish even as small as a .75" fry (that was my first jag ever, a long time ago).

It was the smallest in the tank and got chased a little by the others (the reason my wife picked it instead of the others)

Now it's just exploring. Hasn't been any chasing at all since I added it with the rams and apisto.
