Hey guys, just wanting some advice here from the bird experts. My spouse has the opportunity to buy an Eclectus. The problem is that the bird is already 12mths old. I have seen it personally and she is just gorgeous. My only concern is will it adapt well to a new family after being separated from the bond it has with the previous owner. The breeder is a friend of hers and has offered my spouse to spend time with Chloe(the Eclectus) to see if she will take a liking to her before taking her home.
Opinions welcome.
Just be warned that Eckies are notorious feather pluckers. Yes, they are beautiful and their feathers feel more like fur.. but the are prone to plucking even if fed a proper diet.
Eckies, like cockatoos, are parrots that seem to be deeply affected by hormones (leading to plucking)
If you want an Eclectus parrot you should be prepared to feed a mostly "real" diet (read: no seed mix; no pellets)
Also, Eclectus can make horribly loud noise. Not many peopel talk about it, but it's true.
Eclectus are birds that are very strongly affected by breedidng instincts. I hate to be sexist (I am female) but the easiest way to put it is that Eclectus have horrible PMS for much of the time when they are mature.
The males are better, but of course, they don't have the pretty colors.
Eclectus are surprisingly great talkers and they have adorable voices compared to other parrots.
Good luck. If you want and Eclectus then I would suggest you join some bird-specific forums where they will have tons of ideas on how to feed our Ekkie.
Eclectus are prone to alllergies. If you don't feed them right they will exhibit strange behavior and their colors will suffer....
