ok,I just bought a eclipse 12 and im gonna use it as a cichlid tank. What type of substrate do I use what do i feed the cichlids and anything else i need to know about what i have to do for a cichlid tank.Im gonna get a breeding pair of Microgeophagus ramirezi , A breeding pair of Hypselecara coryphaenoides, A breeding pair of Cichlasoma sp, and a breeding pair of Altolamprologus calvus.

I have all of these fish already bought and waiting for pick-up at my lfs.

feel free to post pixs of your cichlid tanks.

well mate my pic's are too big to add to this message but have a look in my gallery.
The sort of substrate i would use would be gravel no bigger than a pea size to compensate for their digging most cichlids love to dig . You said you have a breeding pair of Microgeophagus Ramirezi these fish are substrate spawners and lay there egg's on flat pieces of rock or wood which they clean thouroghly beforehand . If you need to know anything ellse just ask me mate.

Could i use tahiten sand i have 40 pounds of that stuff and 10 pounds of crushed shells. could any of the cichlids i listed cross-breed and make little half bloods?

I'm not too sure about the Tahieten sand i never used it as far as i hear it's ok . but the crushed shell's is more ideal for East African Cichlids. Check out this site about the sand.

As far as cross breeding go's i'm not too sure i ain't ever tried it but may i recomend a nice little Cichlid to add to the collection : Pelvcachromis Pulcher (Kribs) there just great .

Is this one of the fish you descibed ? The rio Negro Chocolate Cichlid.

Cichlids are very unpradicable some will get on fine with the same speices or different speices but on the other hand they may choose to tear each other apart . Just make sure you don't over load your tank with too many fish, Provide enough space for territory as some may fight over it also provide hiding spots so they can retreat if they feel threatend or scared.

This list of fish you should be fine with. But do not get anything bigger as they will become food:

Agassiz's dwarf Cichlid 3"
Steindachner dwarf 3.5"
Borelli's dwarf Cichlid 3"
Checkerboard Cichlid 3"
Cockatoo dwarf cichlid 2.5"
Keyhole Cichlid 4"
Panda Dwarf Cichlid 3"

Eclipse 12 =the 12-gallon tank? http://www.google.com/froogle_url?q...g6GB4NQCQEhDdAe70sLLRFVHb0A50Mk1BQAAAAAAAAAAA

If so, I have some disappointing news for you...

A 12 gallon tank, in terms of cichlid capacity, is absolutely MINUSCULE. The tank could hold one breeding pair of very small cichlids (like apistogramma species (rams), or dwarf geophagus (eartheater) species that don't exceed 3" in length) or one 4-5" cichlid, such as a calvus.

Hypselecara species and Cichlasoma species are out of the question, for a 12-gallon tank.

With your currently-purchased fish lineup, you'd be looking at a 75g tank at least.
