I have a baby Alligator Gar in a 55 gallon, switching in Christmas time to a bigger tank, but thinking of buying a tank mate for him, thinking a Fire Eel? Or any suggestions?

I have no experience about mixing gar and eel together but I think it bad, gar easily snap the eel in half when it come to surface to breath.
i have a FL gar with a TT eel. They get along fine, but that's really because 1. they're the same size (~16") 2. the eel hides in his tube 98% of the time. Obviously a gator gets significantly bigger and would grow much faster than a fire eel. personally, I wouldn't risk it. I've seen my gar take down smelt bigger than it's head, or so I thought. An eel is just a really big worm to the eye of a hungry gar, specially a gator.
