My dad and I recently got a snowflake eel, and now I'm hooked on eels! This little guy is very interesting to watch and seems to be pretty smart, too; it even has come to associate me with food (krill in this case).

Anyway, on to the main question, what species of eels (if any) are conducive to keeping in an eel community setting, and what size of aquarium would be necessary in order to properly maintain them? We've got the snowflake eel in a 55 gallon currently, and I'll have a 65 gallon (48" x 18" x 17") and a 75 gallon (48" x 18" x 21") available for use by the eel(s) later in the summer (they're currently housing gerbils and gars, respectively).

No more than one eel in those size tanks I believe...

Plus even with one eel your filtration has to be pretty good...If you had like 3 eels in a 75 gallon tank, you would probably need the whole ocean at your disposal to dilute the waste :)

Well maybe not that much. But you would need really good filtration and a bigger tank..As far as aggression goes, there may be some territorial issues, but if you stick with the smaller species and get them all quite young I'm sure you could accomplish it (with proper size tank and filtration of course).

The 75 should be perfect. I have a snowflake in a 150, and he loves it. The bigger the better. I would not mix eels not just because of filtration but because they are relatively blind and will sometimes fight over food and end up strangling or killing the other eel.
Good luck!

eels , ime are quite timid towards each other i have housed a green moray, zebra, leopard eel in a 1200 litre tank all eels were over 900mm there was no aggresion probs, i currently house two large green morays in my shark tank with no probs, you would want a min 700 litre tank for 3 , 2foot eels

So would I be able to get a zebra moray with a snowflake? 150g tank with snowflake, red hind grouper, blonde naso, bird wrasse, and niger trigger.

Only if you like water changes. Becareful with stocking swimmers in the tank with eels it usually turns out badly. I had an undulated trigger rescue that I threw in my 440g it killed and ate a pather grouper, a picasso trigger, a green wolf "morray", and a reverse pattern snowflake before i noticed lack of occupants in the tank. The give away was the first two since they were usually out and about with the other fish. I also had a 4.5ft tess morray that claimed this same take previously. Nothing was able to live with him till I traded him. Zebra morrays are great, low aggression w/ very picky diet shrimp and krill sometimes you can get them to eat other things. I have had a 3ft zebra in my reef tank with no problems after I replaced my crabs with urchins.

So I should be fine if I maintain the water quality?

IMO good water quality is a must for all tanks. You should be fine for now. Just remember a full grown snowflake will need 150g by himself.

if the water quality is maintained, there are plenty of compatible eels, especially in the 125+ gallon range. Zebras and snowflakes can do well together, same can be said when mixing with most Echidna morays. You can also try mixing smallish piscivores with each other, but it will depends on size difference, individual personalities, etc.
