About a year ago I was at my LFS and saw a fish labeled as a "Gold Dusted Eel" I thought it was some type of Swamp Eel, and I had actually just been reading about them a few weeks prior and really wanted one. So I bought it for $80, brought it home, acclimated it to my 350 gallon, once I put it in I didn't see it until about 3 months later when I got rid of the tank and ended up moving the fish I didn't find new homes for into a 180 gallon. After that, I think I saw it about a month later, and for about 8 months I didn't see it again, I thought it had died, but on the 10th or 11th when gave my fish some feeder platies he came out, I was shocked to see he was actually alive, but I grabbed my phone and was finally able to get some pictures of him for an ID (hooray). Originally when I brought him home I Googled the name it was under and the only thing that came up was "Freshwater Moray Eel" which I didn't think it looked anything like, I was wanting to post some pictures on here, but I was never able to get any until a couple days ago, which I will post shortly. And if it was a Freshwater Moray Eel, I'm sure it would have died a long time ago from being kept in freshwater. When I got him he was about 9" or so, and now he is about 14" so I guess he had to have been eating something.
I also saw another eel at my LFS the day I got the platies, which was labeled as a "Tulip Eel" (I think it was $50) I put one on hold and planned to do a bit of reading on it, and maybe buy him if it was suitable for my tank. However, yesterday I woke up to find my step dad had bought it for me. So I added it to my 180 after acclimated it. I did Google Tulip Eel, and read it was a swamp eel, I also called the store it was bought from and they did not have a Latin name for it. It doesn't really have any color pigment, but it has black eyes, so I'm assuming it's leucistic. It's a bit bigger than my other one, I would say maybe 16"
I'm just curious what type of Swamp Eel both of them are since I'd like to know how large of a tank and what type of tank mates they can have in the future. The sizes for swamp eels seem to range from 4" all the way up to 60" I am aware that some are aggressive toward each other when they get a bit larger, and it that is the case, then accommodations will be made.
