hey guys i was just wonderin if u guys knew any site that may be able to help me identify my eel..my friend gave it to me n its pretty big n its with my wolf..he ate 1 of my clown loaches n made me mad so i wanna get rid of it..if i had my flowerhorn i wouldve thrown it in there..so ya.. ne help? thnx in advanced. interesting, it's definitely a spiny eel, not sure what type. It's not a tiretrack, they have patterns pretty much all over the sides, not those black studs with a yellow outline that yours has. It's a nice eel, some species of mastacembelus, no idea which.

Well, there is a lot of different Mastacembelus species, and not many of these are common in aquarium. Many fish stores have rare species without know its name.
Two common spiney eels are Mastacembelus favus and M. armatus. But yours doesn't look like some of them. I think yours are pretty rare and hard to identify, never seen one with such spots. I would also like to know its size.

I have a pretty rare one too, mastacembelus mastacembelus. I don't know of anyone else with this eel. It's yellow brown with mottled tiger stripes.
Need a full side veiw with the dorsal and anal fins in focus to be sure but from the markings it is possibly a Mastacembelus oatesii, they reach 15" and are from Myanmar, the head should be porportianately broader and shorter than peacock eel's which they are occasionaly imported with. The caudal fin will only have 21-22 rays if this is the right species.
