So this morning the TT figured out that he can get into the Penguin HOB filter. Is this a danger to him? He got himself out of it after I started messing with him to get back into the tank. He can't escape from the tank other than get into the filter, all other holes have been tightly plugged.

Thanks

Yes it is a danger to him. I've had 2 spiney eels now get their tails chewed up by doing this ( they got the tip into teh impeller it seems) I started to tape the front plate down.. after a few trys they gave up because they couldn't get past the wheel if the lid is secured down. You may want to try this. once they are discouraged from doing it, they tend to remember and since I haven't had to worry about re-fastening it. You may also try giveing him some more hide spots in the tank as I've found spineys tend to get into filters from lack of a "suitable" hideing spot in the tank or aggressive tank-mates.

Thanks for the info. He's the only thing in the tank besides a few snails. The tank is heavily planted with some driftwood. There isn't a place that he can hide his entire body. I will look into getting something that he can feel more secure.

That would probably do it.. oddly enough my TT started to come out more after I had something he could compleately hide in. PVC works great but detracts from the natural look. I like driftwood, but every spiney I've owned will eventually start moveing it around the tank. lol. he will also liekly start uprooting your plants once he can't get up inot the filter if something bigger for a hidespot isn't available. so I would try adding something before tapeing it off.

So far i've been keeping fresh water fish for 19 years, since i was 11 years old. Last year I got my first spiney and had him for about 6 months. He was by far my favorite fish species. I left the top open for 2 minutes while I was doing some work on the tank, and while it was open he jumped out...i picked him up and put him back in right after he jumped out but he still died. I was given another tank by a friend who was giving up on the hobby and decided to get another one. I think my favorite thing about them is watching the way they hunt for food and explore; and when they feel your vibrations they always poke their heads out to see whats up :]. Anyhow. nice fish for sure, thanks for your advice.
