I bought a tire track eel about 3 months ago. Only a small one, 5". But two weeks ago he disappeared and I looked all over the floor and everywhere couldn't find him. Today I cleaned out the filters and bam! he pops out! Placed him back in the tank and he swam to his pvc pipe. He shares a 90 gal with 1 3" pleco and a 2.5" oscar. Just thought i'd share!

My 12" tiretrack did that several times when he was in a smaller tank. Then, when I moved him to my 125g tank with a sump, he managed to swim through the plumbing, get into the sump, jump out of a 1 inch opening, slither around the inside of the stand and drop through a 2 inch by 1 inch hole down under the stand. My girlfriend found him 3 months later.... very dried out.
I have had that happen before, taking out the filter pad and I felt a slimmy eel in the back of the filter. lol You can just imagin the reaction I had when I wasn't expecting it. They do vanish from time to time. Borrow in gravel, hid in plants, under driftwood, don't come out to eat for a while, they can be known for doing some diappearing acts, which is funny for how big they can be! I think that mine comes out at night and eats leftover foods from the tankmates.
