So I realize that the fresh water fire eel and stripped peacock eel are not true eels but what would be the harm in having both in a tank with bards and cichlids? And in a 55 gallon tank is it ok to have a saltwater eel in a reef set up with clowns, stars, and other colorful fish? Or would I run the chance of the eel eating my current stock?

So you have a 55 gallon tank? Don't get a fire eel. Those things get large. Definately do not put both fire eels and peacocks in the same tank... the Fire eels are aggressive towards other spiny eels.

I have a fire eel in a tank with some very large cichlids... the cichlids ignore him for the most part, although the fire eel can get a little aggressive during chow time. My large cichlids back off and let him eat usually.

I have a baby Long fin eel, you cant keep them in a 55G, soon she will reach 2m plus (biggest fresh water eels around). If you really want an eel though I would highly recommend getting a big tank for one they are great fish to have well mine is, remind me of a cichlid snake, follows me around chases my finger around the glass eats out of my fingers over all very playful and fun to watch.

As for tank mates I think most eels work pretty well with tank mates that wont fit in there mouth, I have found I cant add anything to the tank, even if its bigger she finds away of killing it, one jade perch she gripped onto the stomach and span around like a gator despite the jade being bigger then her (fat wise). Still well worth keeping even if I cant add other fish to the tank!

I had a peacock eel with my africans for well over a year. It spent most of it's time hiding, and once it started coming out more and playing they harassed it to death within a very short period. If you try it I would keep a very close eye on them for aggression.

I have a tire track eel in a sixty gal doing fine with small cats i have it with prrety aggresive fish i think izs because i feed them plenty and also hve plenty of room to hide a drft wood is what i have and it has managed to manuver in one side of the wood and out the other it almost never comes out untill dark

I'd recommend getting an eel as well..as they mentioned..not a fire eel unless you plan on a serious upgrade..however my fire eels so darn well trained, he won't eat food unless it's directly from my hand haha..even if I accidently drop it..he'll just watch it fall to the ground and wait for me to grab another peice so he can come to the surface and nibble away while I hold it..spoiled..spoiled man:)haha I don't even consider my eel a"fish"..he's more my aquatic dog:)
