Hello, I have seen pictures of the effects of black/white substrate on the coloration of florida gars. Does substrate color have an effect on the coloration of longnose gars(or any other species). Also, does backdrop have an effect:confused:

Pics please and thanks!:)

substrate affects all gar i believe. and yes backdrop will have some effect. so will plants and other decor. everything does really

bump!

Well, substrate color affected the color of my shortnose gars, my florida gars, and my spotted gar, so it should be safe to assume it will affect the longnose gars...

All of them will change color depending on your substrate and background color. Darker substrate will result in darker colored gars (in general). It can also make the spots darker, rather than the whole body.

I have notice though, when I first put my gars on black sand, they all turned really dark. Over time, many of the have lightened back up to nearly their "normal" (i.e. pre-dark substrate) color.

Thanks for the feedback evryone, but does anyone having pics of dark substrate having an effect on a longnose:confused:Similarly, does anyone have any pics of the effect white substrate has on longnoses:confused:Does it have any effect at all:confused:

Thanks!:)

look at the pics of conners gar and find the pics of mine. urs will do the same.
his are dark mine are light. do 5 min of searching and ull have ur answer. both of ours can be found in the gar quizes

Not to be a smartass, but the fastest answer is "Dark substrate will darken, light substrate will lighten." ;)

agreed w spatula and madding. i think its just nature that fish adapt to their environment. my gator gar is in a tank w black gravel and black background. i choose this because it makes the fishes colors darker in my tank and i like it. what i really hate is how gator gars spots fade as they get bigger but theres nothin i can do about it. my gator is very dark and his colors are prominent

Here's a pic of my longnose gar, it's in a black back bare bottom tank. It has darkened up quite a bit recently getting direct sunlight, more of a golden color overall.
