I was just wondering the effects of nitrates on fish??? will it slow their growth?? I don't know the long term side effects.

I also have white stuff on the sides of my cichlid 55g tank. I scrub it off and the next day its back. I don't know if its a type of algae or what. It sticks to the side and moves alittle. I would take a picture but it wouldn't show up its to small.

Here is the cycle:

Ammonia->Nitrite-->Nitrate

Here are the numbers you want:

0---->0---->0

I understand that but i have well water and it has 40ppm nitrates. I got advice earlier about getting it lowered i was just curious the effects on fish.

High nitrates can effect fish growth and generally stress the fish, which can lead to disease. 40 ppm is not horrible, but less than 20 ppm is best. If you're on well water, it could be high due to fertilizer run-off. Several filter resins are available to remove nitrates (Brightwell)
