i use them as a lid on said tank and want to drop one in the middle in case i need too. its only temporary as i try to grow some fish out but can i do this without scratching, breaking, etc... the tank?

egg crate makes an excellent divider ive never personaly used it but i know of other people on here that do. It shouldnt scratch the tank

I use it was well. I get some foam pipe insulation and put it around the sides. This gets rid of gaps around the edges and also helps hold the divider more tightly in place

is there any type of foam that is not aquarium safe? i like the idea of using that on the sides.

I've used them before. They work pretty good as long as the fish aren't small enough to grow through the holes, obviously. Just be aware that if you cut them, make sure you sand off the sides to smooth it out...especially if you're going to use it for an acrylic tank.

wrapping them in window screen takes care of the small fish issue
