Good morning, my Santa parrot female has a new mate. He is a first gen Red Texas from a friend, he isn't really red actually looks quite like his dad. I have bred lots of cichlids, pure and hybrids over the last 30 plus years. These two spawned and normally I separate but I gave them dithers in convicts to see if they do protect etc. Did that job perfect.

The eggs looked great, a few white ones and to be fair I was expecting most to turn white. The rest stayed amber. However they just expanded to twice their original size. They never hatched and just disappeared. Assuming parents ate them. I've never seen cichlid eggs blow up like that, totally saw what looked like were eyes. Any ideas what may cause this?

Could just be the fry growing, or maybe a colonization of parasites within the egg

The parents may have very well ate them, could've been stressed over something in or out of the tank. If there's other fish in the tank they could be a culprit. They could've also moved them elsewhere in the tank, might be worth taking a second look to see if they are guarding a new spot.

That's a possibility they ate them, I don't see them guarding. The male still sits over the plate but nothing around.

Yeah probably ate them from stress, pretty easy to stress out new parents. Seen it before where all it took was someone, at the lfs, just tapping on the glass to cause their mated pair of Discus to just eat all of their eggs. Lol least to say the store was not happy with that customer.

1st Gen male red texas mostly likely to be infertile but there’s always a chance.
Yeah I could see that being the case beings that their genetics are all over. I suppose it would take a few gens before ya would start to see some normalcy amongst the offspring, but that could be said about any hybrid really.

I'd say tho that if it comes down to hybrids between 2 closely related species vs 2 distantly related species, you'll probably have more fertile ones with the closely related ones then ya would have with the distantly related ones.

Ex. An amphilophus x amphilophus hybrid vs amphilophus x veija hybrid.

This male has spawned with female HRP and there were a few fry but she ate them and I wasn't trying to breed those two lol

The second spawn with the parrot produced a few fry and definitely more white eggs this time. Now they are in their own tank away from other fish. I also think my female is slowing down with egg production, she is around 7 or 8 years old.
