I recently started feeding my savannah monitor eggs once in a while. i know they like them, but i've also read that too many can cause problems because of the high fat and cholesterol content. so what i've started doing is just using the egg whites. he still gobbles them up. is this a legit food source for him? he still also gets mice and grasshoppers, i'm just wondering how good egg whites are for him and how often i can feed them to him. he is a little over a year old and about 20 or so inches long, weighs about a pound. thanks for any help

He only weighs a pound? I'd figure a yearling pushing 20" would weigh a tad more than that.

I'd say maybe no more than one mouse once a week and same with eggs. Keep a diet of primarily insects. In the wild, rodents don't make up very much of a sav's diet (less than 20%) so unless you give them plenty of room and exercise to burn off those extra calories, than mice should offered sparingly. The same with eggs, but not so much. If you're leaving the yolk in, maybe every two weeks, but if you continue to only give him the whites, then once a week is ok, I think.

thanks for the advice....actually at a pound he is pretty chunky. i'll post pics next time i get the chance. just had him in for a checkup at the vet and everything seems good.
