I ordered a large amount of lace rock to re-do my 55g with and I went out and bought a 2x4 piece of eggcrate. I'm trying to decide if I should use it, or how much of a pita it will be to add it to the bottom of my already set-up tank. My sand is very fine so I'm thinking I can slide & sift it under without too many issues.

I was wondering how many of you have eggcrate in your tank and if you feel it's truly helpful, or any real probs that arose from anyone that wished they had.

Eggcrates are good if you have a glass tank and lots of rocks. It helps stabilize the rocks when fishes move the sand around. Lay the egg crate down first, setup your rocks then add the sand.

i have it in my african 180 gallon tank-and i have a few hundred pounds of rock in there.. i plan on adding another 100. i think its great-and gives me piece of mind when the fish are trenching lol

i wouldnt go without it if you have alot of rockwork or weight in the tank

Thanks for the info everyone, I"m hoping it won't be to much of a pain to add it to my tank with fish and sand already in it. I'm going to go ahead and do it for the piece of mind too.

It shouldn't be an issue.

Just make sure there is a gap all the way around. I mean to say that if the tank is 48"x13", then the egg create should be cut so that it is 46"x11".

Thanks for the tip, yeah I was trying to decide how much space to leave. Really glad for once that my sand is so fine, it would be a huge headache if I had gravel.

I can only imagine what my fish will think when this giant eggcrate comes to attack followed by asteroids of Lace rock, gotta wonder.

i considered this but people have said to me that you can get gas pockets under it which can kill fish is disturbed...

i kinda wish i did use it

not a real problem if you keep up on the cleaning and make sure you move the sand at the same time
