I was just wondering what is better
leaving the eggs with the parents or removing the eggs and placing them in their own tank?

It depends. If there are other fish in the tank they will probably be killed. And if there is a pleco in the tank it will eat the eggs overnight.

Also, once the babies are born and the parents finish taking care of them, in the wild the parents would probably chase them and normally they'd swim away, it's called competitive exclusion. But in a tank they have nowhere to go and might be eaten. Are you willing to catch 100+ tiny fry before the parents or the filters do? Are you able to?

it depends on the parents
if they don't eat eggs keep it with them till they fry swim then try to take the fry to another tank
if they eat eggs then you have to remove it next time
but parents need some time to practice being parents (usually 3-5 spawns)

i like waiting till they form those big swarms then i siphon em into their new tank. Its one helluva slide :naughty:

i agree, just wit till they hatch
also the parents keep the eggs from getting fongus

I have breed severums both eggs removed and left with parents . The hatch rate is significantly higher with the parents taking care of them . The fry can easily be siphoned out when the free swim . If there are tankmates , leaving a light on in the room or small one over the eggs/fry will help the parents protect them .

What species?
