My two eheim 2080 has been running for almost six months now, have not cleaned out anything except changing out the white filter pads on both on the third month. I have recently bought , a media set enough to change one canisters media out. I was thinking of changing and cleaning out half of the media on each canister leaving half of the old and putting in half of the new. I will completely clean out the old media that I am replacing drying it out in the sun and changing the media again maybe every 3 - 6 months. what do you guys think? One way of recycling old media and still maintaining Bio filtration

After five years I changed the media in one of our eheims. What a waste of money that was. Unless you let the media get really clogged with poor maintenance habits, that stuff does not need to be changed.

Take the trays and swoosh them in a tub of tank water a few times, if you feel they need a little more cleaning swap out the dirty water for fresh tank water and swoosh again.

TBH I have used plain tap water in the past with no loss of life or spikes in our tanks.

2080's ceramic media never really needs to be changed. Just wash it out in tank water every 6 months and change the pads every 3 months or so.

I may sound completely stupid but do you guys wash your filters in tank water, I've never been told this before. i usually hose it off with tap water. Its amazing what some pet shops don't tell you i guess.

Of course washing in tap water destroys the bacteria your filter needs to work.
Always wash any part of your filter or the media in tank water. Never allow tapwater anywhere near your filter or Aquarium without using Prime or a similar product.

I use tap water to clean the media. Not hot water, just cold right out of the tap.

I use a bucket and give the media a rinse or two not being all that assertive but good enough to clear any dirt and snails lodged in the trays. I give the blue sponge a good rinsing under the garden hose to rid any nuisance snails and replace the white filter pad.

Works like a charm every time, never see a spike and no ones died to date.

I use tap, but I have 3 Eheims under my tank and clean one at a time.

If you have only one you really need to use tank water because otherwise you will kill your bacteria. Even if you have 2 I'd use tank water.

About changing the media.. i have never changed it as well. But I would clean it more often then 3 months, of course it depends on bioload.
