I have an Eheim 2080. I ran Seachem matrix in the trays and the filter seemed very lacking. At least on a mechanical filtration level. I didn't have any of the trays full, so the media wasn't packed in tight.

I decided to order the media kit made specifically for the 2080 to see if it'd work better. I managed to get all 4 liters of ehfimech in the bottom tray. It took a lot of moving it around to get it. After filling the other 2 trays with substrat pro I ended up with about half a liter extra. Is this normal or did I somehow manage to do something wrong? I'd think, since the substrat pro is round it'd be impossible to not get it placed in the filter right. Also on the ehfimech even though I got it in the tray it didn't seem like the tray above set on it right. I was concerned that it was overfilled and causing the trays to not fit together properly. I'm wondering if it's causing a lot of bypass. Should I remove some ehfimech? Thanks.

You shouldn't pack the media in tightly. What do the instructions recommend?

The media kit doesn't come with directions. I'll have to see if I can figure out where I put the directions for the 2080.

Here is a link to the filter instructions.

Ive had my Eheim 2080 for about 2 yrs now. I have an overloaded 75g w five adult red bellies, and raw food takes a toll on the water.
A full Eheim media set comes with 4L of Ehfimech, 8L of substrate pro, a blue pad (reuse) and 3 or 4 white ones. You cannot fit it all at once. The set will provide at least 2 full setups, or possibly even 4 setups, split it in half among 3 trays: 2L mech, 2L substrate, 2L substrate. I did this the first time and went almost 8 mos. before a necessary reset (I also do constant 10g water changes). I found this to b more than I prob needed and even cut that in half to 1L mech, 1L substrate, 1L substrate. I didn't have to change for over 5mos . It then becomes more economical, making it last beyond a year.
Whatever the case, canisters are great because its very discretionary, you will find what works best for your aquarium.

Welcome to the Forum and thanks for the detailed info on the 2080 media set. It's good to know that more than enough media is provided in the kit.
