Hi,

While my 2080 is out of action getting a repair I was thinking if there was a way to run the canister without the stupid baskets.

I have a spare media tray to play with so what i was thinking was:

1: Cut the basket walls off to give a "base plate" and out that in the bottom of the canister
2: Put the Mech Pro directly on top of the base plate.
3: Cut a piece of JapMat and place on top of the Mech Pro
4: Cut a few grades of sponges to catch the finer dirt and polish the water
5: Place the bio media on top of that
6: place the green lattice screen on top and then the prefilter

Any comments?

could this work better without the baskets?

Thanks

I don't understand how you plan on running the canister if it is out for repair.

How do you plan on powering the filter?

I was planning to stack up and prepare the canister for once i get the pumphead back...since it is not working it is a perfect time to play around with it since i dont really like messing with things when they are running.

I was planning to mod it to work without the baskets then fire it up once the head is back.

with regards to my question...is there anything stopping me running the 2080 without baskets?

The filter needs the media trays in place so that the water flows through the internal tube to the bottom media tray after going through the prefilter tray.

This style filter won't operate the same way the Classic model filters do because of the filter design. So the answer to your question is no, don't modify the trays.

What did you do with the media that was in the filter? Hopefully you put it in the tank or took other means to maintain the beneficial bacteria that was there otherwise you will be starting fresh when the pump head is returned to you.

I was going to leave the prefilter in place, when i looked at the internal layout of the canister, the internal tube released the water underneath the bottom basket, so if i cut a spare basket and removed the sides, so it was like a tray, the water would come down the internal tube under the tray and pass up through the filter...

or am i missing something about the canister?

yeah i put all my bio media into the tank in mesh bags until i get the new head

You can try it but I don't understand why you would want to modify the original design. What purpose does removing the sides on the spare basket do?

the baskets do not sit directly on the bottom of the canister body, they are raised slightly, cutting the basket would allow the mech pro to be raised up of the bottom of the canister so the water can diffuse evenly, also removing the baskets would allow the media to be in contact with the sides of the canister, stopping the bypass in the canister.

the media can be piled up to the level of the green lattice screen and then the prefilter put in place...

do you see where im coming from?

I'm reading what you are trying to accomplish but I don't know if it will work. You can always give it a try and let us know if you notice any improvement.
