I have a used eheim 2215 I want to use for a polishing filter. Anyways, I went to test it and the pump runs but it won't push any water. It will just a little bit but only when it's on it's side. I'm guessing either the impeller is bad or I'm doing something wrong on startup. I filled the canister full with water and submerged the pickup. Anything else that needs to be done?

Suck on the tub the water comes out of to prime the pump
thats what i did with my 2217

-try siphoning the intake and out full of water, then start it up.
After it runs for a little bit, start tipping the canister to get the rest of the air out.

siphon both intake and return full of water? I should just have to siphon the return right? Should pull water through the intake? I really am not looking forward to this

Drain the water out of the filter. Put the intake tube in the aquarium. NOW suck on the output tube. The filter will now fill with water and the air will exhaust out of the output tube. When it stops gurgling, plug it into the electric outlet.

Eheim filters prime the best when empty of water.
