Hi, I am having a eheim crisis at the moment. I took apart and cleaned my Eheim 2217 today for the first time. I rinsed the media and tried to clean the impeller area, only could not figure that out completely --I got the first piece (the oblong bar on the base of the powerhead) unclipped by rotating it and it came out with the shaft, but could not get the panel underneath it out to get to the innards. Did not try too hard as I did not want to break it. I did take the top part of the powerhead off of the base of the powerhead (where the impeller fixture is) when I was trying to figure out how to clean the impeller apparatus, but nothing broke as far as I can see and it snapped back together.

Put everything back together, vasoline on the rubber o-ring, reconnected--opened the intake valves, turned it on..and water gushed out. Thought perhaps o ring was seated incorrectly, tried two more times--water gushed out again. I have the O-ring placed inside the wide groove recess at the top of the wide groove (is this correct?) and have just tried again--same problem. The water is coming, not from all around where the powerhead sits on the cannister, but from the little holes around the powerhead rim where the silver connector hooks clip in and the little rectangular openings around the base of the powerhead rim. What could be the problem? Thanks for any ideas--I am at a loss (and worried about my bacteria dying off before I can figure this out).:nilly:

OK, I now know what I did (and yes, I did it). When I took the top off the powerhead base, I unseated the hidden gasket. Yes, indeed, there is a small, black gasket inside the short, hard plastic pipe inside the base of the powerhead that carries water to the outflow tubing. There is also a small, round grey plastic rim that fits into the top of the pipe after the gasket is in place. I found this when I took the top off the powerhead again just now, as I realized there had to be something awry in there. Lesson to self: don't mess with the top of the powehead!
